The Espace Mathématique Francophone (EMF) was created to promote reflection and exchanges within the French-speaking world on the lively issues of mathematics teaching in our current societies, at the primary, secondary and higher education levels, as well as on issues related to the initial and in-service training of teachers. The EMF contributes to the development of a French-speaking community rich in its cultural diversity, around the teaching of mathematics at the crossroads of continents, cultures and generations. The working language of the EMF is French. EMF is recognized as a Regional organization affiliated to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI).
The scientific symposiums of the EMF, which have been held every three years since 2000, are aimed at the various stakeholders concerned with issues affecting the teaching of mathematics: mathematicians, mathematics educators, researchers, trainers, and teachers at various levels. The locations of the conferences are chosen to respect a geographical balance and to encourage the participation of the broadest possible francophone community.
The EMF symposiums aim to:
- allow the exchange of ideas, information, experiences, and research on lively questions in mathematics education, particularly in relation to the theme chosen for each of them;
- strengthen cooperation between researchers, trainers, teachers, living in different social and cultural contexts, and having common concerns about issues in mathematics education;
- encourage the participation of young teachers and researchers in debates on mathematics education and their contribution to the development of future perspectives;
- promote awareness among teachers, educators, and researchers of their role in shaping the mathematical culture of their respective countries;
- contribute to the development, in the French-speaking community, of research in mathematics didactics and its spin-offs, particularly on the initial and in-service training of teachers.
Previous symposiums have been held in Grenoble (2000), Tozeur (2003), Sherbrooke (2006), Dakar (2009), Geneva (2012), Algiers (2015), Paris (2018) and Cotonou (2022).
